(Name) was bored. When I say bored, I mean he had a whole ton of things he could do, but he was bored because he couldn’t do anything fun with one certain person: Link. His Link, to be exact, and only in a mildly sexual sense; (Name) was more so over-possessive and over-protective of the green-cloaked lad ever since they had met because, well, Link was an extravagant, calm hero-type that (Name) only wished he could be. Others would call it lustful attraction, but the teen rightfully knew it was just respect.

Probably.

When Link departed on his journey after his brief visit to Castle Town, his (h/c) haired friend couldn’t help but whine and cling to his arm weakly in protest of his departure. However, a handsome smile and a soft promise of his return in due time of three weeks was enough for (Name), and he sadly let the hero continue on his journey.

(Name) could still picture the hero’s back as he turned and left Castle Town.

The teen sighed. Link hadn’t returned as he said he would; it had been at least three months since the hero had left, and it didn’t seem like the young man was coming back anytime soon. Well, the Dark Lord Ganon had been defeated by that very hero, so I guess his extended travel wasn’t all for naught.

Still, I wonder if I’ll ever see him again. Probably not, since his soul obviously wants to wander the fuck around this world. (Name) sighed deeply as he walked around the town, adorning his usual delivery  bag and handing out letters to members of the close-knit community. Who am I kidding… He probably doesn’t want to come back because I’ll just cling to him like last time… God, I’m such a fool…

Suddenly, the sound of people cheering filled (Name)’s ears. He perked up. Maybe Link came back! The teen quickly delivered the letter he was holding and ran to town square, only to see knights in shining armor walk into town with an air of importance about them.

If only one of them were my knight in shining armor… (Name) thought bitterly.

Wait, what?! The teen’s face lit up with a rosy colour as he pressed his palms to his cheeks in a futile attempt to cool down his burning skin. His knight in shining armor? What the hell?! When did he start thinking of Link like that?!

The sound of a royal woman’s voice broke (Name)’s train of thought and brought him back to the present world. Ah, right, it was Zelda they were escorting into town, but why? From what (Name) knew, there was no festival, no far off prince or princess was visiting… What was it, then?

“Townsfolk of Hyrule,” her strong voice started, “I have gathered you all here to ask of a favor. I wish to throw a coming home party of sorts; the Hero of Time himself will be coming home soon with the blood of the Dark Lord on his hands and a grand tale to tell us all.” To her words, the townsfolk cheered a merry tune before dispersing and disappearing to take care of their deeds before the great hero came back to his supposed home.

“He’s coming back…” (Name) said softly before feeling anguish and excitement pool into his stomach. Excitement because the knight was finally coming back and he could stop worrying, he could quiet the voice in his heart that screamed ‘what if.’ Anguish for he knew the hero would want time to spend with Zelda and the rest of the townsfolk; not some boy he spent a mere month with as he trained to hone his archery and swordsmanship skills.

I’ll just stay away. That shouldn’t be too hard. A crooked smile broke onto his face. I’m busy anyways, right. Yeah. Busy with deliveries.

When really, he was busy trying to push the thought of the green-cloaked knight out of his mind.

--

Eventually, night fell. The streets were suddenly blooming with coloured lights and flames of unnatural hues. Streamers hung from every balcony and more torches with extraordinarily coloured flames danced wickedly in the middle of town, throwing happy shadows around the illuminated surfaces of houses and buildings alike. Soft melodies of a guitar were heard fluttering throughout the city and the scent of freshly baked goods lured all the townsfolk in for the celebration of the Hero of Time.

Well, all but one, who sat comfortably on the shingles of a roof and switched his gaze between the explosive energy of the celebration and the gentle aura of the twinkling stars above him. (Name) told himself he wouldn’t interfere with Link, but admiring from afar didn’t really hurt, right?

Wrong.

“The great Hero of Time has arrived! Thank the Goddesses for his return!” A townsman cried before a chorus of happy cheers fluttered into the night sky.

(Name) bit his lip. Great Din did it feel like an arrow pierced his heart right then and there.

The teen turned to the entrance of Castle Town to see a very flustered young man get surrounded by a sea of mismatched townsfolk who all simultaneously asked questions and thanked the Goddesses for the return of their green bean. Well, in (Name)’s honest opinion, the Goddesses had nothing to do with his return; it was through Link’s own grit and guts did he make it through this adventure in one piece.

With a soft smile, (Name) turned away from the celebration and watched the sky. His (e/c) eyes glowed as a shooting star lit up the sky.

I wish… I wish I could… I wish I could just get on with life, without any worries He paused, his heart weighing down. I wish I could want something normal…
This is based off of Ocarina of Time, and I know that Link goes back in time at the end of the game, but this is a 'what if' scenario as to what if he didn't go back in time. I don't know, I find it more interesting ;;;

Uhm, okay, so I have written so much of this story, but I'm REALLY FREAKING NERVOUS about posting the pilot chappie because I have seen no Male!Reader x Link stories so I'm like

"Oh god is this taboo what am I doing am I allowed to do this aojijafwoejfa'wpefjwef"

So yeah I'm giving this a shot, yo! And yes, the title refers to being true to yourself and your sexuality because I know a lot of people struggling with finding their identities, so I guess I wanted to make a small journey that shows even the strongest people and even the most ordinary people can struggle and overcome certain obstacles about who they are. I find that really important.

Well, I'm getting too deep here, so I'm gonna stop! Anyways, please enjoy!

Btw I'm not even sure I'm going to post the rest of this story, so please lemme know if you'd like me to continue! I enjoy writing for myself, but I really like to share this with others! So please comment -u-!
